Podcast for 04-14-08 | Animal Crossing Flashbacks

Who knew what kind of effect Animal Crossing could have on a man? In this week's podcast, Qais recounts his harrowing tale of Tom Nook-related horror, joined by Chris and Ross who laugh in delight at his misery. Nintendo's E3 debut of a new DS is discussed, as well as Bad Company's weapon conspiracy, indie games relying on old school art, video game retail stores that look like Borg ship interiors (and how awesome that would be), and Motley Crue is made fun of for being old. Your questions are also answered within as the mailbag is opened and not mocked in the slightest.

Podcast for 4-07-08 | Relating to "Gamers"

Is being called a "gamer" a bad thing? On this week's podcast, Chris, Mack and Qais look into how gamers as a group are regarded by the general populace. Are we really all just trash talking escapist sociopaths? Or is "gamer" just another flavor of geek? We discuss various arguments on both sides, also touching on this week's news from Microsoft's answer to the Wii, to analyzing Portal's main villain, to Penny Arcade's newest indie games venture.

But not everything sucks! We also talk about the MMO documentary Second Skin, and how we think that it would be nice to see a documentary paint gamers in a kind light, but how it's not likely to fill seats at the theater. Ok, that kind of sucks. All of these topics and more await you!

What makes a geek tick? This week, Chris, Qais, Colette and Mack discuss our formative geek experiences; what defined our tastes, what makes us tick. Podcast for 02-04-08 | Talismanic

While all the rest of the world was scouring the Internet for videos of their favorite Super Bowl commercials, The Weekly Geek was recording our least caustic podcast ever! Chris, Qais, Mack and Colette ramble about the dangers of man-children, squeal about Ender's Game becoming a...uh...game (speculating which other books would make good games in the process), cast a realistically pessimistic eye on Rock Band for the Wii, and unapologetically profess their rampant book-lust. Our PopCap cover contest winners are announced within, and the moment you've all been waiting for: Qais gets a new gamertag.

Fall 2007 Music Podcast
The quarterly music podcast is upon us! Furniss and Wiegand are at it again with their favorite brand of snobbish elitism and indie music to match. Everything is covered here, from the unique sounds of Andrew Bird to the hilarious comedy numbers by Flight of the Conchords. Check it out and leave your opinions/personal picks in the comments section. Also, nail the jump for a tracklisting, iTunes links and added commentary on each artist. Remember to support the indie artists that you like!
Andrew Bird - "Imitosis"
Overcoming a bad first impression with us is something really hard for musicians to do and Andrew Bird definitely did. ![]()
St. Vincent - "Your Lips Are Red"
The line in this song "My face is drawn on with this number two pencil" just kills me every time. ![]()
Tegan & Sara - "Back In Your Head"
A great deal of maturity shown here from a band not necessarily famous for that sort of thing. ![]()
New Pornographers - "Myriad Harbor"
Danny Bejar's contributions to their latest record Challengers seem a little more solid than writing partner A.C. Newman's. Just a first reaction to their latest material. ![]()
John Vanderslice - "White Dove"
More fantastic songwriting from Vanderslice whose album Emerald City is bound to be a boutique favorite in this year of indie releases. ![]()
Iron & Wine - "White Tooth Man"
Sam Beam in excellent form on this very untypical album for Iron & Wine standards. Look for this album soon.![]()
Band of Horses - "Is There A Ghost?"
Generally I love Band of Horses, but they're sounding very generic on the newest material. Odd... just very odd. Still enjoyable though.![]()
The Go! Team - "Titanic Vandalism"
Still as peppy as ever. Songs like this are kinda cheerful anthems for cubicle workers. You can conquer the world when you listen to The Go! Team, or at least it feels that way.![]()
M.I.A. - "Boyz"
This track definitely rocks the discoteque.![]()
LCD Soundsystem - "All My Friends"
Sorta reminds me of old U2, in a way. John in the Morning from KEXP is obsessed with this band.![]()
Silversun Pickups - "Well Thought Out Twinkles"
Hearkens back to Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins.![]()
Flight of the Conchords - "Business Time"
New Zealand's current favorite sons have one of the funniest shows on TV and now an uproariously hilarious comedy album on Sub Pop Records. Like Matt & Trey from South Park, they're very proficient on their instruments too.
